A man is dead after a Monday night shooting in west Denver’s Mar Lee neighborhood, near Garfield Lake Park, police said.

Rafael Acosta-Hernandez pleaded guilty in May to shooting Leonel Silva-Perez.

“Please don’t shoot him — he has mental illness,” a woman can be heard on body camera footage telling police as they arrive on scene.

Police initially reported that the crash near the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Virginia Avenue involved a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Herman Antonio Sisneros called 911 Sunday morning, saying only that he would provide more information when officers arrived at his home in the 1500 block of South Xavier Street.

A large brush fire burning along Interstate 25 north of Colorado Springs on Monday shut down the southbound highway for more than two hours, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers responded to a report of multiple shots fired at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday. No one reported any injuries.
