Good afternoon. It’s Tuesday, June 30.

In today's newsletter:

  • The Alaska Division of Elections has released a sample ballot that takes unusual steps to distinguish between the incumbent U.S. senator and the challenger of the same name.

  • Alaska’s federal food assistance program had the highest error rate in the nation for the fourth consecutive year, according to data recently published by federal officials.

  • The Anchorage Assembly approved a pair of new contracts covering operations at its main ice arenas, despite lingering worries about the longevity and economic viability of Sullivan Arena.

It's "crunch time" in the World Cup. A new format brought the introduction of the round of 32, and the opportunity for twice as many countries to experience knockout-round soccer. As the first-ever round of 32 unfolds, here are some of the storylines to watch.

Anchorage weather

It's rainy today with a high around 61 degrees, though the forecast calls for increasing sun later in the day. Wednesday should be mostly sunny, with clouds returning later this week. Daytime highs will hover in the high 60s and low 70s over the next few days.

Here’s what else is making headlines in Alaska today.
