Fraudulent “Free Athletic Shoes” Flyer

scam

Please be aware that a flyer is circulating that appears to be an official VA document but was not created, approved, or authorized by VA. The flyer was generated using AI and contains incorrect and misleading information. It also displays footwear that VA is not permitted to provide, which may cause confusion among Veterans.

VA policy permits the provision of PDAC‑approved footwear only when medically necessary and when allowed by applicable VA policy. This policy remains unchanged.

Additionally, the flyer includes a VA seal that does not resemble the official VA seal, further indicating that the document is not legitimate.

Veterans may have already seen or received the flyer, so you may share this notice with them to clarify that the flyer is not valid. Please ensure staff do not distribute the original flyer itself.

If Veterans have questions, simply explain that the flyer is not an official VA document and that they should rely on verified VA communications for accurate information.

Phoenix VA PTSD Fair Highlights Assistance from VA and Community Partners

PTSD Fair

June is PTSD Awareness Month and as part of this years awareness efforts, staff from various VA departments and community organizations hosted a resources fair for Veteran's and members of the community. The purpose of the event was to increase awareness that symptoms of traumatic stress are treatable, and the community at large has resources for Veterans that can help.

PTSD Fair

The Phoenix VA PTSD Clinical Team was onsite to provide information about evidence based psychotherapies well researched to be effective for treating PTSD, and to inform attendees of ongoing research focused on continued efforts to improve and advance treatment.

Representatives from recreation therapy, Women's Veteran's Program, Psychosocial Recovery and Rehabilitation, Mental Health Case Intensive Case Management, and Suicide Prevention were all present to demonstrate available resources across VA for a holistic approach to addressing PTSD. Community organizations were also in attendance providing information about treatment programs in the community, availability of service animals for PTSD, and prosthetic devices that may be helpful.

Staff at the Carl T. Hayden VAMC and community members want Veterans and family members to know that PTSD does not have to be forever, and we are here to help.

Struggling with Sleep? You’re Not Alone.

sleep

Sleep difficulties are very common and can affect your energy, mood, and overall health. They can also make it harder to manage other medical conditions. The good news: effective help is available for the two most common sleep concerns—insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea.
Getting high-quality sleep is just as important as staying active and eating well. Better sleep can make a real difference in your daily life.

The Veterans Health Library – Path to Better Sleep program offers easy-to-follow tools to help you understand and improve your sleep. The program includes four key parts:

  • Screen for Sleep Disorders
  • Understand Sleep Hygiene
  • Self-Manage Insomnia
  • Learn About Sleep Apnea

One in three people have problems sleeping at some point in their lives. There’s a big difference between one night of poor sleep and trouble that persists. If your sleep trouble goes on for months, you may have a sleep disorder. Concerned about your sleep? VA’s Sleep Check-Up Tool can help you understand it.

Veteran Athletes: Beware of Scammers Trying to Ruin your Game

Vet Athletes Scam

Scammers target Disabled Veteran athletes with fake offers of free or discounted adaptive sports equipment. They steal money and personal information by demanding upfront fees for items that never arrive.

Guidance to avoid scams:

  1. Buy from trusted sources: Verify vendors before purchasing. Review online reviews.
  2. Be Wary of Unrealistic Deals: If a deal seems too good to be true, it likely is.
  3. Protect Personal Information: Do not give out your personal or VA account credentials to anyone.
  4. Consult VA: If in doubt, consult VA or your adaptive sports program coordinator for advice.

If you have any concerns or questions, please reach out to your VA contact person or adaptive sports program coordinator immediately.

Veterans who suspect they have experienced fraud can find out more and report to the appropriate agency at VSAFE.gov or by calling (833) 38V-SAFE.
