Saving the last of our planet's rhinos

The winning photojournalism image from this year's exhibition, titled How to Save a Species, shows a white rhino foetus conceived through IVF as part of attempts to save this species from extinction.

Photographer Jon A Juaréz discovered in recent years how “photography not only captures nature’s beauty but also opens a window into the complex realities that threaten it – helping us understand, care and ultimately protect it”.

The case of the white rhino

Once numbering more than 500,000, today there are fewer than 27,000 rhinos remaining on our planet. Only two northern white rhinos survive.

What's being done?

Led by the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research, the BioRescue Project develops advanced reproductive technologies for saving critically endangered mammals.

The project has so far created more than 30 northern white rhino embryos. Jon's been working as a photographer with the Leibniz Institute since 2020.
