Yeah we decided on the redwood trail instead of the coastal route because the weather report showed the fog would clear by noon. The path stays shaded most of the way which helps a lot. We brought sandwiches and plenty of water. The elevation gain is moderate nothing too steep. There is a bench at the halfway point overlooking the valley so we stopped there for a while. Parking fills up fast on weekends so arriving before eight makes a big difference. We saw deer and a few squirrels but no bears. The ranger said the wildflowers should be peaking in a couple weeks so we might go back then. The whole trip took about four hours including breaks. The visitor center map is accurate but the trail markers are clear enough that you do not really need it.

The weather stayed cool most of the morning which made the hike comfortable. We saw several families with young children on the path so it is definitely doable for most fitness levels. The trailhead has a small lot with about thirty spaces and there is overflow parking on the main road if needed. Restrooms are available at the start but not along the trail. We packed light layers just in case and that worked well. The forest canopy blocks a lot of sun so sunscreen was not really necessary.

Overall it was a good day out. The trail is well marked and maintained. We will probably do it again when the wildflowers are in full bloom. The ranger recommended going midweek if possible to avoid the crowds.

I went with the raised bed design from the community garden workshop because it fit the space well. Cedar works best for the frame since it holds up without treatment. I used a mix of topsoil and compost from the local supply store. The tomatoes are vining nicely and the basil is growing fast. Watering every other morning seems sufficient. The pepper plants are slower to establish which is normal. I added a drip system with a timer so I do not have to worry about watering during busy days.

The cucumber trellis is holding up well. I already picked a few zucchini and shared some with neighbors. The soil settled more than expected so I added another layer of compost last week. I am thinking about building a second bed next year for root vegetables on the other side of the patio. The whole project took a weekend to complete including the soil delivery and assembly. I used cedar boards from the lumber yard and corner brackets from the hardware store.

The drip system connects to a standard hose spigot and runs on a simple battery timer. I mulched around the base of each plant to help with moisture retention. So far everything is growing well and the raised bed design keeps the weeds manageable. I check on it each morning while having coffee and it has become a nice routine.
