Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi epic Disclosure Day is in theatres this weekend, a conspiracy-theory thriller from the director whose entire career appears hell bent on answering one question: Are we alone in the universe? In his latest film, a cybersecurity expert and a TV weather reporter seek to expose a government coverup about alien life. There are aliens and car chases and bad guys, but ultimately this film falls flat, writes chief film critic Barry Hertz: “This is sincere, sloppy, magnificent stuff that will drive almost everyone absolutely nuts.” Read more.

And if you’re missing the HBO comedy Hacks, consider Shaw Festival’s Funny Girl, a glossy (albeit imperfect) production worthy of all the divas, starring Sara Farb as Fanny Brice.
