Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector Reveal the Secrets Behind The Gilded Age’s Power Couple |
For three seasons now, Carrie Coon and Morgan Spector have played Bertha and George Russell, the ambitious couple at the center of the HBO hit series The Gilded Age.
In the first two seasons, the New York power couple uses their influence to help each other succeed in both business and society. But in this third season, their relationship strains after Bertha makes decisions for her family that George doesn’t agree with. |
Both Coon and Spector use inspiration from their real-life marriages for this onscreen partnership (Coon is married to Tracy Letts, and Spector to Rebecca Hall). “We’re both a little proud of our marriages. We’re both a little proud of our partnerships, and the way we each nurture each other’s lives and try to create that possibility for our partners’ fulfillment,” Spector tells Little Gold Men. “Getting to bring what we know in our own lives into this fictional marriage was really satisfying for both of us because it just felt really authentic.”
Coon and Spector, who are now busy shooting the fourth season of the show, spoke with Chris Murphy about what it was like to play the couple as a fractured pair, the period piece’s timely relevance to today, and the surprising things they’ve learned about the historical period.
