No images? Click here Dear Reader, I’m a new editor at The Conversation U.S., having started in March, but I’ve worked in many newsrooms across my career. I’ve seen firsthand the broader turbulence in the media industry – my previous job was as a business editor at The Washington Post – and I’m proud to have joined a nonprofit news organization growing in influence and readership. One big reason The Conversation has become the most-read nonprofit newsroom in the country is our steadfast commitment to what truly matters in quality journalism: independence, trust and expertise. When I applied to join the team at The Conversation, there were two compelling ideas: First, I was impressed by the dedicated community of supporters (readers, universities and foundations) that believe in its mission. Unlike at news organizations owned by billionaires or cost-cutting corporations, that mission isn't diluted or compromised here. We’re all working toward the same goal – making research accessible by having the people behind it share their knowledge with you, with everyone, without a paywall or any subscription charges. I’m also aware of just how few platforms there are right now that let experts connect with readers seeking clear, accessible analysis rather than op-ed bombast. At a time when expertise as a principle – and the institutions that support it – is under attack, The Conversation is more valuable than ever. If you believe in independent journalism and free access to accurate information, then please be our partner and support this work. I’m excited to be a part of the work of The Conversation. I’ve found my new colleagues to be smart, hardworking and dedicated to this mission. But all of us recognize that we couldn’t do this work without the support of readers like you, and for that we are grateful.
