Hi Krzychu, I drove 40 minutes to pick up two bathroom doors (believe it or not that is HA related, just read on...) Not fancy doors. Not secret billionaire doors. Just two indoor bathroom doors from a warehouse. And the whole way there, my brain was very busy being “prepared”.
Very important questions. Except I forgot the one thing that actually mattered: The contract. Or even the contract ID. The warehouse people could not magically guess which doors were mine by looking into my honest eyes. So I got to do the whole trip again. Forty minutes there. Forty minutes back. Then the bonus round. And while driving home, I was thinking: this is exactly what happens when we build dashboards in Home Assistant the old way. We focus on the ropes, the tools, the level, the tiny details... But we forget the “contract”. In dashboard language, that means we start by asking:
But the real first question should be:
A light. A cover. A speaker. A sensor. A calendar. That is the contract. And this is why the new Home Assistant dashboard card selection process is such a nice change. Instead of throwing you into a card-name buffet and saying “good luck, chef”, it starts closer to the thing you already understand: the entity. Then Home Assistant suggests the card. Simple idea. Big beginner relief. I made a video about it here: Watch the dashboard card picker video If you want to help the channel, please watch it until the end. Or skip it completely and go organize your contracts. I would respect that too. You can also read the article here: Home Assistant Dashboard Card Picker: The Beginner Update That Actually Matters Main lesson: Pick the thing first. Then pick the card. Talk soon, P.S. If you ever see me driving with two bathroom doors tied to the roof, please do not ask... just flash your lights, say hi, and assume Home Assistant triggered a very specific automation. I even made the evidence look official: see the bathroom-door meme here |
