WWES Friday Updates 6/5/2026

June 5, 2026

Dear Waynewood Owls,

We are rapidly approaching the finish line of another incredible school year!  First and foremost, I want to send a massive shout-out to all of our Owls for wrapping up our Standards of Learning (SOL) testing this week. Testing season requires focus, stamina, and determination, and our students met the challenge with the true grit of a Waynewood Owl. We are so incredibly proud of their effort!

Our band, choir, and strings students took to the stage for our annual spring concert, and they were very impressive. The dedication it takes to master an instrument or perfect a choral piece was evident in every single note. We also had a deeply moving and joyful music concert hosted by our Enhanced Autism Classes for their families and special guests. Seeing our students shine, express themselves through music, and share their talents with their loved ones brought so many smiles—and a few happy tears—to everyone in attendance. Thank you to our phenomenal music teachers and staff for making these events so magical.

The emotional high point of our week came when we welcomed back the graduating high school seniors who started their journey right here as Waynewood Owls. Watching them walk through our hallways in their caps and gowns for our traditional Senior Clap Out was an unforgettable moment. Our current students lined the halls, cheering and high-fiving these young adults who sat at these very same small desks not so long ago. We are so excited to see what the next chapter holds for these former Owls, and they reminded all of us why the work we do here is so vital. Once an Owl, always an Owl!

Looking ahead, next week marks our final full week of the school year, and it is packed with milestone events. Most notably, we will be hosting our 6th Grade Promotion Ceremony to officially celebrate our oldest Owls as they prepare to fly up to middle school. It is always bittersweet, but we are eager to give them the grand send-off they so  deserve.

Thank you for your partnership, your encouraging words, and your constant support throughout this year. We have a thrilling final stretch ahead of us, and I look forward to finishing this school year strong, together. Have a wonderful, restful weekend!

Sincerely,

Katie Cachine, Principal

Alyssa Bonner, Assistant Principal

Get2Green Efforts

SCA Students Weed the Garden Beds

This week, the Waynewood Student Council Association (SCA) officers and the 6th grade class representatives worked in the courtyard to support our Get2Green efforts.  Along with a lot of weeding, they harvested almost 20 pounds of beets and kohlrabi that was then donated to Rising Hope Food Market that serves those in need along the Route 1 corridor. We will have plenty more to give as we expand our gardens next year.  If you're interested in helping in our gardens, please email our Get2Green lead teacher Beth Holt at edholt@fcps.edu

Summer Medication Pick-Up

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than the student dismissal time on the last day of school. Medication left in the health room after that time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. However, with parent or guardian permission, a high school student may transport over-the-counter medications to and from the school health room.

If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s). Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services.

A medication authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. Please be sure medication orders are clear. All information on the form must be completed. Part I must be signed and dated by the parent or guardian. Part II must be signed and dated by your health care provider. Approved over-the-counter medications given for headaches, muscle aches, orthodontic pain, or menstrual cramps do not need a health care provider’s signature. Antibiotic or antiviral medications for 10 consecutive school days or less do not require a health care provider’s signature either. For all asthma medications, a Virginia Asthma Action Plan must be provided. More detailed information is available on the back of the medication authorization form(s).

Over-the-counter medication must be in the unopened original container and clearly labeled by the parent or guardian. No more than 100 pills/tablets of OTC medication should be brought to school at a time. All prescription medication, including samples, must be labeled by the pharmacist or health care provider. Please make sure that the label clearly states your student’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage of the medication, and the time to be given.

Calendar Survey

FCPS values your input as we plan future school calendars. On Friday, June 5, all caregivers and FCPS staff will receive an email from noreply@fcps.edu containing a unique link to complete the FCPS Calendar Survey.

Your feedback matters. Please take a few minutes to share your priorities and perspectives by Monday, June 22, at 11:59 p.m.

Your individual responses will be kept confidential and will not be shared with school staff or used in any way that identifies you or your student. Only aggregate, summary-level results will be reported to the Fairfax County School Board.

If you do not receive a link to the survey or have technical difficulties completing the survey, please contact the FCPS Office of Research and Program Evaluation

Summer Immunization Events for All FCPS Students

Inspire Health Alliance, in partnership with FCPS, will be providing school-required immunizations this summer. Immunizations will be provided at no out-of-pocket cost to students or families. Registering families will be required to provide insurance information, if applicable, but students without insurance may still participate.

Visit the FCPS and Inspire Health Alliance Student Immunization Events webpage for dates, times, and locations. Additional event dates will be made available and shared four to five weeks prior to the event on the webpage. Additional immunization resources are also available.
