Dear Canterbury Woods Families,
This week we were thrilled to welcome back our former Cougars who will be graduating from high school this year. This annual tradition is always a highlight for our staff and students. Congratulations to the Class of 2026! We are incredibly proud of you and wish you all the best as you begin your next chapter.
Next week is our final full week of school, and our SCA has planned a fun-filled Spirit Week to help us celebrate the end of the year together. Be sure to check out the schedule in the picture above!
The school health room would like to remind parents and guardians that all medications stored in the health room must be picked up no later than 2:05 on the last day of school. Any medication left in the health room after this time will be destroyed. It is school policy that medications must be retrieved by the parent or guardian; medications cannot be sent home with the student. If you have any questions, please contact Veronica Yañez, our School Health Aide, or Tiffany Meakins, our Public Health Nurse, at 703-764-5610.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Leslie Malkowski, Kristi McGeehan, and Mindy Milliron
CWES Administrative Team
Our Garden Club held its final meeting of the year this week! Students painted a variety of colorful rocks that will be added to our sensory garden, helping to create a welcoming and beautiful space for all to enjoy.
Field Day is coming! We are very excited for this fun-packed event and want to share some reminders and tips to remember on Friday, June 12th:
- Bring a refillable water bottle labeled with your last name and teacher’s name
- Sneakers are the BEST OPTION for this day
- Wear comfortable clothing
- We will be outside for roughly two hours, so don’t forget about sun safety (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, etc.)
- Show good sportsmanship! Bringing a positive attitude will make sure everyone has an awesome Field Day
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mr. Healey (brad.healey@fcps.edu) or Mrs. Bruce (esbruce@fcps.edu).
Former Canterbury Woods Elementary School students who are now members of a middle school Girl Scout troop are hosting an invasive species clean-up on Sunday, June 7, from 9:00–11:00 a.m. at Canterbury Woods as part of their work toward the Silver Award. They hope to start a new tradition that can continue for years to come. The goal is to remove invasive plants so native species can be planted instead.
Please plan to wear long pants and socks to help avoid poison ivy, and don’t forget your water bottle. Light snacks will be provided. Students under age 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
Come help make Canterbury Woods greener!
Summer Meals
Summer Meals for Students
Starting Monday, June 22, no-cost meals will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis at the sites and times listed on the FCPS Summer Food Service Program webpage. Students must remain on-site while eating their meals.
This year, thanks to generous support from Educate Fairfax, families may also receive one no-cost breakfast and lunch per adult at the following elementary schools: Braddock, Dogwood, Glen Forest, Hutchison, Hybla Valley, and London Towne.
Summer sites will continue to be added, so check the Summer Food webpage regularly for updates.
Calendar Survey
Calendar Survey
FCPS values your input as we plan future school calendars. On Friday, June 5, all caregivers and FCPS staff will receive an email from noreply@fcps.edu containing a unique link to complete the FCPS Calendar Survey.
Your feedback matters. Please take a few minutes to share your priorities and perspectives by Monday, June 22, at 11:59 p.m.
Your individual responses will be kept confidential and will not be shared with school staff or used in any way that identifies you or your student. Only aggregate, summary-level results will be reported to the Fairfax County School Board.
If you do not receive a link to the survey or have technical difficulties completing the survey, please contact the FCPS Office of Research and Program Evaluation.
Summer Resources
Summer Resources Help Students Stay Curious, Healthy, and Busy
The FCPS Summer Resource Guide has activities and tips on a variety of subjects and interests, from camps and activities to health and safety resources.
Be sure to check back over the summer, as more resources may be added.
Learning Doesn’t Take a Vacation and Neither Does Fun!
The FCPS Summer Learning webpage offers ideas and strategies for families to keep students curious until August. Summer is the perfect time to help your student explore new interests, reinforce concepts, and stay engaged!
Want a quick way to recognize an employee or team? Share an FCPS CARES! Families, colleagues, and students are all invited to submit. The FCPS CARES is automatically sent to the recipient(s) and their supervisor, and is posted on fcps.edu. Additionally, each month one school in our region wins a staff celebration from HR.
