C.A.R.E.S. Expectations - Bathrooms

We are experiencing many incidents of writing inappropriate language on the walls and stalls, a lack of respect for student privacy, and ongoing property damage in our third through sixth grade boys and girls bathrooms.

These behaviors are creating an unwelcoming and uncomfortable environment for our students. They also divert valuable time and resources away from our primary focus on learning.

In response to these ongoing issues, we are implementing a temporary change to our bathroom procedures in grades 3-6. During this time, classes have transitioned to scheduled classroom bathroom breaks throughout the day. If a student needs to use the bathroom at a time outside of these scheduled breaks, their teacher will assign them a buddy, and they will utilize the designated bathroom on the first floor.

This temporary measure will allow us to more closely monitor bathroom usage and reinforce expected behaviors. We sincerely hope that this focused approach will help to address the current challenges.

It is important to understand that if these concerning behaviors and property damage continue beyond this one-week period, we will unfortunately need to transition to scheduled classroom bathroom breaks for the remainder of the school year. This is not a step we take lightly, but the creation of a safe and respectful environment for all students is our top priority.

We have consistently encouraged our students to be upstanders and report any behavior that does not align with our school expectations to their teachers or a member of the administration. Your support in reinforcing this message at home is greatly appreciated.

We believe that by working together, we can ensure that our school bathrooms are safe, clean, and respectful spaces for all students. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to address this important issue.

Cub Run Family Fun!

As we continue to celebrate our Cub Run community and families, we invite our families to join in some informal family fun on Thursday, June 11 from 5:30-6:30pm.

Families are invited to bring picnics to enjoy on our field while also having some family fun on our playground and enjoying some of our new recess equipment for the 26-27 school year! So come on out and join in the fun! Whether it’s playing soccer, shooting hoops, drawing with chalk, playing on the playground, or checking out other equipment!

No registration is required, but students must have an adult with them. Our equipment will start to be packed up at 6:30pm in preparation for our chorus concert at 7:00pm.

We want to thank the Fairfax250 Commission for its support of this event, part of Fairfax County’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

Cub Run Grad Walk - June 8

Calling all Cub Run graduates who are high school graduates in 2026!  Our grad walk is on June 8 at 2:30pm. We are excited to welcome back our High School graduates for one of our beloved traditions. These proud Bulldogs will return to their elementary roots and walk the halls of Cub Run as our students, staff, and families celebrate this incredible achievement.

If you would like to participate, please meet at Door 1 (front of the school) in your cap and gown at 2:15pm. The event will begin at 2:30 PM, and families are warmly invited to join us in the main lobby as we honor these former Cubbies. The graduates will follow a celebratory route throughout our building. Unfortunately, there will not be time after the walk to speak with teachers as our classes are still in session.

Following the walk, families will reconnect with their graduates in the lobby. We will then gather on the playground for the class photo.

We are looking forward to seeing you.  Congratulations on your graduation!

Medication Pick-up Information

The school health room is reminding parents and guardians that all medication stored in the health room must be picked up no later than 1:25 pm, student dismissal time, on the last day of school, June 17. Medications left in the health room after that time will be discarded. It is school policy that medications must be picked up by the parent or guardian. Medication cannot be sent home with your student. Medications may also be picked up before June 17 during school hours

If your student will be enrolled in a summer program sponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools, the existing medication authorization form(s) may be used for the summer program, but you will need to pick up the medication on the last day of school and deliver the medication and completed forms to the summer learning site on the first day of the summer program. Please let the health room know if you would like a copy of the form(s).

Medication authorization forms for next school year may be obtained from the school or online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/school-health-services. An authorization form is required for any medication, prescription or over-the-counter, to be kept at school. If you have any question regarding which authorization form to use, please reach out to the health room at 703-633-7510 or email Yina Lee, PHN at ylee3@fcps.edu.

Electric Scooter/Bike Safety Reminder

As summer approaches, we want to share an important safety reminder regarding electric scooters, electric bikes, and other motorized vehicles being used in our neighborhood. We know many students enjoy riding scooters and bikes with friends, and we want everyone to have a fun and safe summer. We encourage families to take a few moments to review important safety expectations with their children, including:

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Use lights or reflective/bright clothing when riding near dusk or in low visibility • Slow down and use caution near intersections and driveways
  • Stop and look carefully before crossing roads
  • Stay alert and avoid distractions while riding
  • Follow traffic rules and ride responsibly
  • Use sidewalks when possible and appropriate

Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping us care for our students and community.

Attendance is Important: Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

School accreditation ratings in Virginia are based on student performance across nine school quality indicators within the state’s Student Performance and Support Framework (SPSF). One of these indicators is chronic absenteeism. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, regardless of reason and whether the absence was excused or unexcused.  A student is determined to be chronically absent if the rate of their days absent divided by their total days in membership is greater than or equal to 10% - that is only 2 days per month on average.

As of June 5, Cub Run’s Year to Date Chronic Absenteeism rate has decreased to 8.9%. As we finish out the remainder of this school year, we will continue to update this percentage with you in hopes that we can continue to have an acceptable chronic absenteeism rate of 10% or lower.

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, Fairfax County Public Schools appreciates your continued partnership in supporting your child’s success. Regular attendance plays an important role in helping students stay engaged in learning, maintain connections with their teachers and peers, and finish the school year strong.

Attending school consistently also helps students build valuable habits such as responsibility, perseverance, and daily routines that support success both in and out of the classroom.

If your child needs to miss school, please remember to report the absence. Full-day absences can be reported in ParentVUE. Families may also report absences by calling the school attendance line or emailing the school-designated attendance address.

If your child is experiencing challenges that are affecting attendance, we are here to help. Please contact us so we can partner with you to provide support and resources. Learn more about attendance resources

PTA News

Dear Cub Run Families,

As we begin planning for the 2026–2027 school year, we want to take a moment to thank our incredible Cub Run community for the support, time, and energy you continue to give to our students, staff, and PTA. Because of you, we create memorable experiences and opportunities that make Cub Run such a special place for our Cubbies.

As many of our current board members prepare to complete their final terms over the next two years, we are looking for parents and caregivers, and teachers and staff, who may be interested in becoming more involved with the PTA — whether in a leadership role, supporting role, or simply learning more about how our PTA works behind the scenes.

Specifically, we are currently seeking:

  • A parent interested in working alongside our current PTA President during the 2026–2027 school year. Our President’s term concludes in 2027, and having someone work directly with, and collaborate with Lindsay throughout the year would help create a smooth and successful transition for the future of our PTA.
  • New VP of Volunteers, as the upcoming year will be Steph and Dan’s final term in the position.
  • New co-Secretary, as Megan’s term will be concluding after the upcoming school year. This is a shared position, and the second volunteer in the role has already committed to another two-year term. Responsibilities currently include helping manage our PTA newsletter and PTA website, making this a great opportunity for someone who would like to join an established team and share responsibilities.

In addition to leadership opportunities, we are also looking for volunteers to help lead and support some of our favorite Cub Run events and programs, including:

  •       Ice Skating Chair
  •       Spirit Nights Chair (fundraisers/sponsorships at local restaurants)
  •       Yearbook Chair
  •       Cub Run a Thon Committee

We are also excited to introduce a new board position for the upcoming school year:

6th Grade Liaison

We are looking for a parent — or small group of parents — to help make our rising 6th graders’ final year at Cub Run extra special! This role will include organizing and planning favorite traditions such as Volleyball Night and coordinating 6th grade fundraising activities. Let's make the last year for our oldest Cubbies one they'll always remember!

It is also important to share that a PTA can only continue with an active board and volunteers willing to fill key positions. Without enough members stepping into leadership roles, our PTA could eventually face the possibility of disbanding. We know that would be deeply disappointing for our school community, as the PTA plays such an important role in supporting school events, enriching experiences, family engagement opportunities, and special traditions that help make Cub Run such a special place for our Cubbies. Every role — big or small — truly helps keep these opportunities available for our students and families.

We know that stepping into a PTA role can sometimes feel intimidating, but you are never expected to do it alone. Our current board members are happy to support, guide, and help new volunteers learn the ropes. Many of our best ideas and strongest programs have come from parents who simply decided to give it a try.

Whether you have a little time or a lot, your involvement truly makes a difference.

If you are interested in learning more about any of these opportunities or would simply like to have a conversation about how you can help, we would love to hear from you!

President - Lindsay Reiner: president@cubrunpta.org

VP of Membership - Theresa Hassett: membership@cubrunpta.org

VP of Volunteer - Dan & Steph Sherwood: volunteer@cubrunpta.org

Secretary - Megan Oris and Amy Burke: secretary@cubrunpta.org

Treasurer - Subrata Chakraborty: treasurer@cubrunpta.org

Thank you for continuing to help make Cub Run such an amazing community for our students and families.

Warmly,

Your Cub Run Elementary PTA
