There's no threat for storms in Massachusetts today, but we will have to contend with a few both days this weekend. Other news we're following includes a massive overnight fire at a yacht club in Winthrop, and a man is facing charges after an incident at Sandy Beach in Hopkinton. Plus, Lunenburg Public Schools is deeply mourning the death of a 7-year-old girl. I'm Kaitlin McKinley Becker, and these are your headlines.

Several spots hit 90 degrees today, tracking possible thunderstorms this weekend

We have more heat in store for today.

Several towns and cities will hit 90 away from the coast, while we fall just short of that at the water’s edge. In fact, low/mid 80s are in store at the beaches of the North Shore and the South Shore thanks to the sea breeze. Cape Cod & the Islands will see mid and upper 70s.

We’re a bit hotter – and slightly more humid – for tomorrow.

Massive fire burns a dozen boats at Winthrop yacht club

A massive fire broke out overnight at a yacht club in Winthrop, Massachusetts, destroying at least a dozen boats.

Winthrop Fire Chief Stephen Calandra said the department received a call shortly after 2:30 a.m. for six boats on fire at the Cottage Park Yacht Club on Orlando Avenue. Flames spread to six other boats in Boston Harbor, with at least 12 boats lost that the chief said were very expensive, high-end value vessels.

All of the boats were unoccupied, according to Calandra, who said they confirmed with yacht club staff. No injuries have been reported. Massachusetts State Police are on scene.

Lunenburg mourning death of first-grade student

The public is mourning the death of a 7-year-old girl from Lunenburg, Massachusetts.

Hadley “Haddie B.” Boucher, a first-grader born in 2018, died on May 27, according to her obituary. She had an inoperable brain tumor.

Lunenburg Public Schools announced this week that the district would have a half day on Friday to allow school staff to attend her funeral services.

70-year-old man charged with attempted murder after fight at Mass. beach

A 70-year-old man is facing attempted murder and other charges after he allegedly assaulted and held a 21-year-old man under the water at Sandy Beach in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, on Wednesday.

Steven Dana, of Hopkinton, is charged with attempt to murder, strangulation/suffocation and assault and battery on a disabled person.

Hopkinton police said they responded to a report of a fight in progress at Sandy Beach on Lake Maspenock just before 7 p.m. Wednesday. Police said they were able to quickly identify the parties involved in the altercation and began conducting an investigation.

Video shows close encounter with great white shark in Boston Harbor

A local fisherman got the surprise of a lifetime while out on Boston Harbor.

Thomas Rocci said he and two friends were wrapping up a day of striper fishing when they spotted a great white shark swimming near their boat.

Rocci captured the encounter on video, saying the shark came close enough to leave the group stunned.

Teen facing charges after 3-year-old hit by dirt bike in Brockton

A 3-year-old was hospitalized after being hit by a dirt bike in a park in Brockton, Massachusetts.

Police responded just before 8:15 p.m. to Edgar’s Playground.

The child was brought to an area hospital to be evaluated, police said. The nature and extent of the child’s injuries were not shared.
