Let’s Predict the Tony Award Winners |
For this week’s very special edition of Little Gold Men, all eyes are on the June 7 Tony Awards.
I’m Rebecca Ford, and for this episode, my cohost John Ross and I turned the reins over to some of our New York–based—and Broadway-obsessed—colleagues, Vanity Fair senior editor Hillary Busis, staff writer Chris Murphy, entertainment director Caitlin Brody, and Little Gold Men senior producer Michele O’Brien, to fill us in on the landscape and likely winners this year.
As they point out, all eyes will be on best revival of a play, the category in which the starry Death of a Salesman is competing. The production was produced by Scott Rudin, the controversial movie and play producer who has been making his comeback, at least on Broadway. “The thing you can’t say about Scott is that he has bad taste—he’s got great taste,” says Murphy. “If I had to pick my favorite play of the season, it would probably be Death of a Salesman.”

Salesman is a strong front-runner to win best revival of a play, according to our team of experts, while this season’s other starry blockbuster production, Giant, starring John Lithgow, is contending for best play (Liberation, a timely, twisty meditation on second-wave feminism, which won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in May, is considered the front-runner in that category). There’s also a “battle of the titans” going on between Lithgow, Nathan Lane, Daniel Radcliffe, and Mark Strong for best lead actor in a play.
The members of the Little Gold Men theater team not only break down the likely winners in all of the major categories, but also reveal their hopes and dreams for the ceremony, which has become known for its stellar performances. It’s hosted by Pink this year, a somewhat surprising choice since she’s not exactly a homegrown Broadway talent. But we’re hoping for lots of aerial acrobatics and a night to remember.
