What’s being crafted in Spanish class? These students made tizana, a drink from Venezuela. They are learning about food in their classes and we are learning about Hispanic cuisine in many forms.

Franklin Community,

We are excited to share that we have officially completed all of our SOL testing for the year! While we still have a few makeup tests and retakes to complete in the days ahead, all of our students completed their scheduled testing sessions without incident. Thank you to our students for their effort, focus, and flexibility throughout the testing window, and thank you to our staff for the incredible amount of planning, organization, and support that went into making testing run so smoothly. Coordinating a schoolwide testing program is truly a team effort, and I appreciate everyone who helped make the process such a success.

We are also looking forward to our 8th Grade Dance next Friday, May 29, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. This year’s theme is “A Night in Hollywood,” and students are encouraged to wear semi-formal attire for what should be a fantastic evening celebrating the end of their middle school journey. Tickets are available on MySchoolBucks for $5 through May 26. We are excited to celebrate our 8th graders as they prepare to head off to high school, and I know it will be a memorable night for our students.

This week also showcased the incredible talent of our music department during our Band, Orchestra, and Chorus concerts. The performances were outstanding and reflected the tremendous amount of time, effort, and dedication our students and teachers have put in throughout the year. Thank you to Ms. Magwire, Ms. Mortensen, and Mr. Ayars for all of their hard work preparing our students for these performances and for the countless ways they support our music programs each day. We are also excited for the upcoming end-of-year music trip to Busch Gardens on June 5! I’m already preparing myself to see if I can beat my personal record of 22 roller coasters in one day, although I’m not sure my back is quite as confident as I am.

Congratulations as well to all of our Soaring Falcons who were recognized yesterday! These students were selected by their teachers for consistently demonstrating our CARE traits by being Connected, Accountable, Respectful, and Empathetic members of our school community. Students were recognized through a special video presentation shown during Advisory, and we are proud of the many students who continue to make Franklin such a positive and welcoming place. Great job to all of our recipients!

Lastly, I want to recognize our Civics teachers for organizing mock trials for our 8th grade students this week. Students participated in realistic courtroom simulations covering cases ranging from classroom disruption to tardiness. Students took on the roles of judges, bailiffs, prosecutors, defense attorneys, witnesses, and jurors while other classes observed from the gallery. Prosecutors and defense teams spent class time preparing their arguments and building their cases before presenting them during the trials. Juries then deliberated and carefully considered the arguments presented before reaching verdicts. It was an outstanding real-world learning experience that gave students valuable insight into how our court system functions. Thank you to Mr. Spivey, Mr. Terrones, and Mr. Lamay for creating such an engaging and meaningful opportunity for our students.

Don’t forget that students are off Monday-Wednesday next week!  We will see everyone back at school on Thursday, 5/28.  Have a wonderful LONG weekend, and Go Falcons!

PTA - Opportunities to Help

End of Year Parties

We are actively planning the 7th and 8th grade end of year parties, to be held on June 16.  For the 7th and 8th grade parties, we are still in planning stages, but plan on having a large outdoor inflatable obstacle course, a photo booth, and ice cream and popsicle treats -- Depending on donations, we may be able to do more!

We wanted to ask for your help in getting out the word on a few things as we wrap up the year.   We are still looking for volunteers for the parties -- I know that we're all at the stage where our kids don't necessarily want us there, but this really cannot run without parent volunteers -- I'm personally going to volunteer at the 7th grade party to avoid being seen by my 8th grader!   :)

We also are still seeking donations, and would appreciate any help at reaching out to friends to get some additional donations -- any amount is fine and more than appreciated!

PTA Board Members Needed

If you are a 7th grade parent, or have incoming 6th graders, or know of any of those parents, the PTA is desperately seeking volunteers for the PTA board -- I've served in this role for 2 years, and my child is going to high school, so I can't stay on -- We need to have at least a President and a Treasurer for the PTA to stay active and to be able to do parties or teacher appreciation next year.   If you have any interest, please reach out to Necoya Tyson or Tracy Berman-Kagan directly at necoya.tyson30@gmail.com or berman.kagan@gmail.com.

fcps cares

Want a quick way to recognize an employee or team? Share an FCPS CARES! Families, colleagues, and students are all invited to submit. The FCPS CARES is automatically sent to the recipient(s) and their supervisor, and is posted on fcps.edu. Additionally, each month one school in our region wins a staff celebration from HR. Encourage your community to show our staff that their hard work is appreciated!
