I knew Coloradans would be upset that Polis released Tina Peters from jail early -- after all, she is an annoying blight on this state who played a role in President Donald Trump's dangerous attempts to undermine the 2020 election and remain in office.

I was not prepared, however, for the amount of hate mail I'd receive from Republicans.

Their logic goes something like this -- Peters is completely innocent and was a political prisoner being held by captors who invented the charges against her. Polis' refusal to pardon her (make it as though she was never convicted) is a slap in the face. Instead, Polis granted her clemency, resulting in her immediate release, but her criminal record still stands.

The Denver Post editorial board supported Polis' decision -- we think the sentence was overly harsh and based in part on protected speech -- but we do not think Peters is innocent.

Most importantly, Peters also does not think she is innocent. Polis told The Denver Post editorial board that Peters admitted guilt and apologized in her application for clemency. I have yet to see that document. The Post's reporters have filed a records request for it. But Peters did Tweet out an admission to her guilt shortly after Polis granted her clemency.

Peters is many things -- divorced from reality in a way that has made her vulnerable to the president's lies -- but she is most certainly not innocent.

Polis is wrong to free Tina Peters, caving to Trump (Letters)

“With the reduction of Tina Peters’ sentence, Gov. Jared Polis has destroyed his own legacy,” William C. Compton of Lakewood writes. “Peters was the one person who did not escape accountability for her election-related crimes, unlike almost everyone else, including Trump.”

Here’s why Polis is right to reduce Tina Peters’ 9-year sentence (Editorial)

Peters is wrong. Trump is wrong. But we cannot look at the 9-year sentence and not consider the importance of the First Amendment and our deeply held commitment to free speech.

Congress is still trying to decimate the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (Opinion)

If this CRA resolution passes, it could devastate the monument, turning it into a place where out-of-control off-road vehicle use, landscape-level clearcutting, and other extractive activities would all be possible. The good news is that this fight is one that we, together, can win.

Colorado led the way against farm animal cruelty. Now Congress will roll it back. (Opinion)

Colorado led the way in adopting humane farming practices. Now the U.S. House of Representatives is trying to stop that momentum.

There is room for empathy and tolerance in debate over pronouns (Letters)

“No transgender person wants to change you or your family one bit — they just want to be able to go to work and not be insulted every time they’re spoken to.” — Dennis P. Laughren. Golden

Hickenlooper: If confirmed to lead the BLM, Steve Pearce will spearhead Trump’s assault on public lands

Public lands are part of our shared Colorado heritage. If we fail to protect them now, future generations will lose something money can’t buy.
