Atoms Weekly Recap
Baseball had an exciting week, starting with their final regular season game at TJ, Monday evening. The Atoms needed a win to secure the 6 seed in the National District Tournament and did they ever get one! With Cole Cardwell on the mound, the Atoms pitcher threw a gem of a game to help the Atoms win the game 1-0! The second game of the week was the National District Quarterfinal matchup with Justice. The Atoms held a lead throughout taking a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the 6th inning, where the Wolves pushed two across the plate to make it 3-2 and eventually holding off a rally to secure the win. The Atoms qualified for the region tournament and will travel to TBD on Tuesday, May 26 at 4:00pm.
Softball battled through two dramatic games this week, showing resilience and determination until the final outs. The Atoms fell in a high-scoring 25-24 contest against Thomas Jefferson on Monday evening before turning in another strong performance Friday against Falls Church. Annandale held an early lead 4-0, before Falls Church rallied to take a 7-6 lead entering the seventh inning when KK Supple delivered a clutch home run to tie the game. Falls Church ultimately responded with a walk-off run to edge the Atoms 8-7 in another heartbreaking finish. The Atoms will now move on to the Occoquan Region tournament and will play Tuesday, May 26 at 4:00pm, at TBD.
Boys Lacrosse wrapped up its season this week, falling to Falls Church 15-3 in the regular season finale on Monday before dropping a 16-0 decision to Hayfield on Thursday evening in the opening round of the National District Tournament. The Atoms competed hard throughout the season and closed the year against two tough opponents. Thursday’s game also marked the final game of Coach Bill Maglisceau’s career, as he will retire at the end of the school year after his longtime dedication to Annandale lacrosse and student-athletes.
Girls Lacrosse closed out the regular season with a 10-3 loss Monday evening at Wakfield. Thursday evening was a trip to Edison for the opening round of the National District Tournament that saw the Atoms trail 1-0 after the first period but the Eagles were just too strong as they ran away to get the tournament win 17-3. Despite the results, the Atoms continue postseason play this week and will travel to Woodson on Wednesday for the first round of the Occoquan Region Tournament at 6:00 p.m.
Boys Soccer saw its season come to an end this week with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Falls Church in the National District quarterfinals. The Atoms played a solid and competitive match throughout, creating several scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize on their chances in the narrow postseason defeat.
Girls Soccer suffered a tough 1-0 upset loss to Mount Vernon in the National District quarterfinals Friday evening. Despite the setback, the Atoms earned a spot in the Occoquan Region Tournament and will continue postseason play with first-round action beginning Thursday evening. The opponent for said match will be out Tuesday morning.
Boys Tennis had several players compete in the National District Singles and Doubles Tournament this week. Andrew Banks picked up a first-round singles victory before falling in the second round, while both Atoms doubles teams were eliminated in their opening matches. Annandale now turns its attention to team competition in the Occoquan Region Tournament, which begins Friday at Fairfax High School at 3:30 p.m.
Girls Tennis had several players compete in the National District Singles and Doubles Tournament this week, highlighted by a strong performance from Lizzie Gronberg. Gronberg won both her first and second round singles matches to advance to the semifinals and qualify for the Occoquan Region Singles Tournament. She later fell in the semifinals but competed with great determination and spirit throughout the tournament. Gronbergn The Atoms now shift their focus to the Occoquan Region Team Tournament, which begins Friday at West Springfield at 3:30 p.m.
Outdoor Track & Field competed in the National District Championship Meet Wednesday and Saturday at Mt. Vernon. A complete recap will be in next weeks newsletter.
