The Eye on Foxborough Newsletter

Kicking off

The Patriots will attack the 2026 season with an improved their roster. And that's without A.J. Brown, who is expected to arrive after June 1.

With a better team, should the expectation be for them to improve on last year's improbable 14-win season.?

Given all the elements at work, it's hard seeing the Patriots duplicate last year's mark.

Being better won't necessarily translate into a more wins, or another Super Bowl appearance.

Especially after lookin at the regular season schedule, which came out Thursday night. It's a doozy.

Right out of the gate, the Patriots have a rematch with the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks out in Seattle to open the season.

Unlike last year, there aren't many cream puffs on the schedule. The 2026 slate isn't "soft" by any means.

After Seattle, there's a plethora of contending teams the Patriots will face this year: Denver, Kansas City, LA Chargers, Chicago, Green Bay, Detroit, Jacksonville and Buffalo (twice).

That said, the Patriots, who will play in five primetime games, should be competitive against all of their tough opponents. They should still win enough games to be a playoff team.

Anything less would be a disappointment.

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2021

The news: In honor of the NFL schedule coming out, it seemed only fitting to flip back to one of the most highly anticipated schedule release years in Patriots history.

Five years ago, fans in New England and beyond couldn't wait to find out the date Tom Brady would be returning to Foxborough to take on Bill Belichick and the Patriots.

After 20 seasons, and six Super Bowl titles, Brady left in free agency, joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With Tampa Bay on the Patriots schedule, that game held significant meeting. And then some.

I remember writing a column on the "epic" showdown the minute we knew it was a Week 4 game in prime time.

Brady vs. the Patriots. The greatest quarterback ever, against the greatest head coach to walk a sideline.

GOAT vs. GOAT.

“The whole league is waiting for that game,” CBS analyst Charles Davis told me at that time. “The whole country is watching this thing. Whether (any perceived animosity) is valid, the whole league is in on this one. Tom vs. Patriots, Belichick vs. Tom, they’re all in. It’s a heck of a deal.”

It's interesting that K.J. Britt, one of the recent free agent signings with the Patriots, was with Tampa Bay at the time. The linebacker recalled coming to Gillette Stadium, and playing in that game alongside Brady.

“Man, that was crazy. That was crazy. Man, that game, I’ll never forget that game, it was so live,” Britt said. “You know, it was a Sunday night game ... and, you know, that whole week of practice, you know, just the urgency that Tom had, you know, how much that coming back, and to win here for Tom, you know how much that meant for him ... just the little moxie behind it.

“I remember that week of preparation. It was fun. Everybody wanted to go out and win for Tom. We got the win. It was a good game, and I’ll never forget it.”

The Buccaneers held on for a 19-17 victory in the rainy Week 4 matchup.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

Which players stood out at rookie camp last week? Brad from Dedham

Guregian: First off, it's important to note that the one practice they allowed the media to watch, it wasn't in pads, and in three-quarter speed. For the rookies, this camp is mostly about learning and getting acclimated.

That being said, I did come away with a few impressions.

First round pick Caleb Lomu, who played left tackle, moves well. Sixth round pick Dametrious Crownover, who played right tackle, is mammoth. But he also moves well. In a non-padded practice it was tough to tell more than that.

Behren Morton was the only quarterback at practice. During the one team period - an 11-on-11 - he was perfect. His arm was strong, he handled the scheme and was accurate.

Who impressed me the most?

UDFA wide receiver Kyle Dixon. He caught four passes, elevating for one, sliding for another. He got the biggest signing bonus. It was easy to see why.
