In the wake of Callais, as we’ve been discussing this week, the Supreme Court couldn’t wait to give Alabama permission to go back to using maps it called illegal just three years ago. The means cutting out Alabama’s second Black opportunity district, which the Court just said Alabama had to have. That’s the district represented by my former DOJ colleague Shomari Figures. Alabama’s Attorney General Steve Marshall and some of the Republicans in the legislature have gone further, saying they’d like to do away altogether with Black representation in Congress. Our response? All Roads Lead to the South. There will be a major protest in Alabama this Saturday, conducted in both Montgomery and Selma, the heart of the district Congresswoman Sewell represents.
