| BY MEGAN SCHRADER MSCHRADER@DENVERPOST.COM / @MEGANSCHRADER Attorney General Phil Weiser and U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet both wasted precious time during Thursday's Democratic primary debate for governor, accusing each other of failing to adequately oppose the Trump administration. I grew weary quickly of the empty insults — both men have made no secret of their disdain for the president and have both worked equally hard to fight the administration’s worst impulses. Bennet threw
the first punch, pointing out that Weiser did not join a lawsuit during Trump’s first term challenging the president’s orders to separate children from their parents at the U.S. border. “That is not the kind
of leadership we need,” Bennet said. But Bennet's attack is a bit nitpicky. Colorado cannot and should not join every lawsuit brought by attorneys general from across the country, and Weiser has joined more than
50 lawsuits against the administration during his time as attorney general and led a few lawsuits of his own. Bennet might have attacked first, but Weiser took it to a new level, promoting a silly website his team created to highlight Bennet’s “yes” votes to confirm six out of 200 of Trump’s nominees for positions in the administration. Bennet has said he regrets some of those votes -- especially Chris Wright -- but explains that he was trying to wield strategic influence on areas critical to Colorado. I personally want a senator who
can play the political game strategically to Colorado's advantage. Colorado has far more pressing issues that Bennet and Weiser (and the Republican candidates who debate on Thursday) need to spend time talking about during this
campaign. Focus! Want to sound off on a topic? Tap here to submit a letter to the editor or email your letter to openforum@denverpost.com.
