Trump's Bro Trip to China
What’s going on: President Donald Trump is headed to China later this week, marking the first visit from a US president in nearly a decade. (You’ll never guess who it was last time.) On the agenda: ironing out a truce in the tariff war, finding an off-ramp in the Iran war, and smoothing out US-China business relations in the AI war. So, a light lift. Trump is bringing some bros for backup, including Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and execs from Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, and Meta.
What’s at stake: For years, economists have predicted a shift towards a world increasingly led by China. Trump has repeatedly threatened China’s economic growth with tariffs and sanctions, but China’s President Xi Jinping hasn’t blinked… or backed down. Case in point: Beijing recently nixed Meta’s $2 billion bid to take over a Chinese AI company. Add in the war on Iran, which is alienating US allies by creating chaos in the energy markets, and Xi suddenly seems to have more leverage in these one-on-one talks than he has in years past. Trump may have high hopes, but we can probably rule out a “big, fat hug.”
