Paper Tiger, Burning Bright |
Just before Cannes commences, Rebecca Ford presents an exclusive first look at one of the film festival’s biggest titles: Paper Tiger, a tense family drama starring Scarlett Johansson, Miles Teller, and Adam Driver. It’s one of only two American films in competition at Cannes this year—and it marks a triumphant return for director James Gray, who conceived of the story as a follow-up to his celebrated drama Armageddon Time before rethinking it. “One of the things I’ve learned is that there are movie gods, and you can’t always dictate what they’re telling you, and you can’t always control the subject,” he tells Ford.
Elsewhere, Ford notes an intriguing new trend in prestige TV—all the spring shows with AI-focused storylines; Adolescence somehow wins even more awards, this time at the BAFTA TV ceremony; New York’s power players (including VF’s own Mark Guiducci), rub elbows at an exclusive party; and before the curtain rises, Savannah Walsh gives the lowdown on exactly what you need to know about Cannes this year. |
