You worked hard enough this week. Let us plan your weekend…
1.
Yes, a new Lord of the Flies adaptation is now on Netflix. But before your eyes glaze over like it’s high school again, hear us out: The four-part series was written by Adolescence co-creatorJack Thorne and is already being called “the best TV show of the year” — with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes to back it up. Plus, while it’s mostly faithful to William Golding’s 1954 novel, each episode centers on a different schoolboy, all played by standout young actors. Somewhere, your ninth grade English teacher is smiling.
2.
PSA for anyone who is a mom, has a mom, or knows a mom: The key to avoiding Mother’s Day disappointment isn’t the perfect gift — it’s doing this super simple thing ahead of time. And it works for basically every other holiday or special occasion, too.
This weekend, we’re swapping our usual iced lattes for this new iced tea that blends electrolytes and tea with a citrusy twist. No caffeine crash here.*
5.
Turns out, boxed cake mix’s highest calling isn’t cake. It’s this two-ingredient streusel topping, which we’ll be putting on anything and everything. Or, let’s be honest, eating it by the spoonful.
Happy (almost) weekend. I’m currently hell-bent on making the most of May. It’s peony season, I’m in my short-lived ideal temperature range, and I have at least a month before I start to stress that summer’s already almost over. With that in mind, here are my non-negotiables this weekend:
Making this Open-Faced Blueberry Pie — a favorite since my early 20s. Now that my 11-year-old daughter and I have started to bake pies together, I feel a duty to show her what life can be after you’ve added lime juice to blueberries.
Locating the perfect white jeans. I’ve never found a pair I like — but this year, that changes. I’ve narrowed it down to either these wide-leg Levi’s or the white version of my favorite Aritzia ones. Both are high rise and non-stretch, because your denim should match your standards.
Seeing Dad Don’t Read This, a new play from Eliya Smith, whose first off-Broadway project, Grief Camp, got great buzz. In further proof that 2026 is the year of girlhood nostalgia, Smith’s latest, set at a recurring sleepover, nails one of adolescence’s most critical yet forgotten lessons: You can figure out a lot about who you are in your pajamas with your friends.
Reading One of Us by Elizabeth Day. Wry British class commentary within a tightly wound whodunnit? Sold.
Running again. It’s been a long hiatus (my excuses include kids, work, digital distraction, and weird, flattening end-of-day exhaustion), but the Outside is too beautiful right now not to just go. Playlist suggestions welcome.
