Kicking off

Patriots rookie camp is on tap this weekend.

On Thursday, the team formally introduced first-round pick Caleb Lomu.

He was an interesting choice for the Patriots right out of the gate. Why?

He's primarily a left tackle.

The Patriots chose a left tackle with their first pick (4th overall) in the 2025 draft.

Does that mean Lomu is going to replace Will Campbell, last year's first-round selection?

Not necessarily. Campbell is the starting left tackle for now.

But the selection of Lomu was a good pick nonetheless for several reasons.

He's an insurance chip both for the aging Morgan Moses (35) and Campbell, who still needs to prove he can handle the position.

Lomu will likely be utilized as a swing tackle. If Moses or Campbell gets hurt, the University of Utah product could step in.

Or, if he outplays either one, could take over as the starter at some point.

During his introductory press conference Thursday, Lomu said he'd feel comfortable on either the left or right side.

"I just view myself as a tackle just in general, left or right side," he said, either tackle position I'm happy to play and feel comfortable playing."

This Week In History

(Each week, MassLive will dig back into the past, pick a certain year, and time-frame, and relive what was happening with the Patriots)

The year: 2019

The news: We learned last week that Rob Gronkowski was voted in to the Patriots Hall of Fame by the fans.

Seven years ago, Rodney Harrison earned the same distinction.

And, it meant a lot. While he hasn't gotten much consideration for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which makes little sense, Harrison got into the Patriots Hall on his first try.

He was on the ballot with Richard Seymour and Mike Vrabel, who both eventually earned their red jackets.

In Harrison’s mind, this was more a validation of what he meant to a football team during his 15 seasons, including six with the Patriots.

“The fact that the fans voted me in, it means more to me than, say, the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” Harrison said at the time. “The fans got a chance to see me play every week. They got a chance to see the story, the injuries, the adversity and the comeback and the plays that were made. … They’re not going by reputation or rumors or anything like that.”

Harrison, the only defensive back in NFL history with 30 sacks and 30 interceptions, was beginning to doubt he would ever get into any Hall of Fame, much less the Patriots version.

Patriots Question of the Week

Here is this week's highlighted question:

With Stefon Diggs' court case now past, and the jury finding him not guilty of assault and strangulation charges, might the Patriots bring him back? Brad from Dedham

Guregian: With A.J. Brown likely landing in Foxborough after June 1, it's highly doubtful Diggs would be re-signed. And even if a Brown deal falls through, I still don't think that will happen.

The one season the Patriots got out of Diggs was great, beyond any expectation given he was coming off ACL surgery. But I think the Patriots have moved on. They also signed Romeo Doubs. They're a bit redundant.

But I do think Diggs will get a job with another team.
