“Y’know, Brent, I think you’re quackers for driving around with all these ducks,” Connor said, barely controlling his laughter. “I mean, what if they all get loose — fly the coop!” He lost control and roared with laughter.

I slammed the back doors of my van shut. “Yeah, good one, Connor,” I said.

I’d gotten roped into being the designated duck driver for the children’s charity annual duck race, and I’d been getting feathered with jokes all afternoon. Fortunately, this was the last load of a thousand or so rubber duckies that I had to drive from the fairgrounds down to the “holding pond” on the south shore of the river that ran through the city park.
