A bit of good news: Substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect in Colorado are down 40% since 2021, which itself had lower-than-typical numbers. 

We can't be certain that fewer families mistreated children, but the number of calls to the reporting line stayed steady, suggesting that the lower cases don't reflect fewer eyes on kids.

I talked to state officials, child abuse experts and a parent about a prevention approach that assumes most people want to do right by their kids, but may fall short if they don't have the necessary coping skills and material resources. In that view, while a percentage of cases still require removing children for their safety, most families can stay together with the right support.

Colorado’s child abuse and neglect cases drop 40% in 4 years

Last year, the Colorado Department of Human Services reported 6,116 children were victims of substantiated abuse or neglect, down from 10,779 in 2021.
