Future CAP: regions call for fair support and generational renewal

Members of the Commission for Natural Resources (NAT) of the European Committee of the Regions met on 20 and 21 April to discuss the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) under the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). At a time of rising costs, climate pressures, and trade volatility, local and regional representatives highlighted the urgent need for stronger multilevel governance, fair support measures, and targeted actions to ensure stability, rural development, and resilience against external shocks.

Local leaders warn against the risk of greenwashing in the next long-term EU budget

The European Committee of the Regions' ENVE commission warns that the proposed structure for the next long-term EU budget entails the risk of greenwashing, weakening the delivery on EU climate and environment targets, and increasing territorial disparities. Speaking at the meeting, European Parliament's ENVI Committee chair Pierfrancesco Maran agreed with the importance of securing sufficient funding for climate and environment, and underlined that actions supported under the current LIFE programme should continue to benefit from dedicated, continued and predictable funding.

Regions and cities push for simpler digital tools and advanced cybersecurity capacities

Strengthening Europe’s competitiveness and resilience through advances in digital transformation, cybersecurity, and industrial policy while ensuring that local and regional authorities are adequately supported and actively involved was the main focus of the meeting of the Commission for Economic Policy (ECON) on 23 April. Local and regional leaders adopted a draft opinion, calling for the simplification of digital public services through user-friendly European Business Wallets. They also addressed growing cybersecurity challenges, and how to align industrial and defence initiatives with territorial needs.

Regions and cities call for stronger local dimension in EU innovation policy

The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Commission signed a renewed Joint Action Plan during the meeting of the CoR’s Social Policy, Education, Employment, Research and Culture (SEDEC) commission on 24 April. The aim is to strengthen inter-institutional coope"ration and reinforce the role of regions and cities in research and innovation (R&I) policy.
