Amistad Snags Legacy Lit VP’s Debut Novel
Tara Parsons at Amistad acquired U.S., Canadian, and open market rights, at auction, to Black, Black Bird by Legacy Lit VP and publisher Krishan Trotman from Johanna Castillo at Writers House. Set in post–Civil War New York, the book follows an ambitious nurse at the Colored Orphan Asylum who eventually realizes that “peril lurks not only beyond the asylum walls but within them,” per the publisher. Publication is slated for summer 2027.

Among this week’s offerings are Noor Naga’s debut memoir, Third Person, centered on the declining health of her grandmother; Ready or Rot by Kendahl Landreth, the first in a two-book series in which two rival public school teachers fall in love during a zombie apocalypse; and an as-yet-untitled book by political analyst and Substack writer Michael Lange examining Zohran Mamdani’s successful mayoral campaign in New York City.
The Latest in Children’s and YA Deals
New projects this week include The Book Witch by Nora Elghazzawi, a debut fantasy romance inspired by Lebanese folklore, in which a young author strikes a bargain with a handsome sorcerer and the stories she writes start coming true, while her new power draws the attention of an eligible prince; Crown & Captive by Kathleen Kitt, a YA fantasy romance about a rebel lord’s daughter forced into servitude in the court of her enemy kingdom, where she becomes entangled in a forbidden romance; and Thieves’ Game by Laura Martin, illustrated by Matt Schu, a dual-POV middle-grade adventure in the spirit of Chasing Vermeer in which the daughter of an art thief and the son of the detective who arrested him join forces to solve a mystery at Chicago’s Field Museum.
