Greetings! It's been a tough stretch for anyone working in Hollywood, and on Tuesday, things got a little worse. Disney began a round of 1,000 layoffs across marketing, publicity and other divisions. The round marks the first under new CEO Josh D'Amaro, who addressed staffers and said the move was necessary "to foster a more agile and technologically-enabled workforce to meet tomorrow’s needs." That's cold comfort to the thousand employees affected by the change, which comes on top of layoffs announced by Sony Pictures Entertainment, Epic Games, Universal Music Group and Bad Robot, which shuttered its Los Angeles office in a retreat to the East Coast. Last year also saw significant cuts, with Challenger, Gray & Christmas tallying nearly 17,200 cuts in the media industry, up 15% from the prior year. What's worse is the bloodletting isn't expected to slow down. The merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery will certainly bring more layoffs, despite CEO David Ellison's assurance that much of the projected $6 billion in merger cost cuts will come from "non-labor sources." While there's been a lot of talk of preserving the role of creatives — high-profile actors, directors, showrunners and screenwriters — there's less attention paid to the broader ecosystem of jobs like technicians, grips and, in the case of Disney, publicists and marketers, who also support these projects. “Hollywood, believe it or not, is a blue-collar town. It’s thousands and thousands of Grips and Gaffers. Drivers and Decorators. Builders and Boom operators. Camera teams and Caterers. And they’re all about to get f—ked,” Damon Lindelof said in an Instagram post Monday that explained why he signed a letter to protest the merger. Here's to those affected by the numerous layoffs over the last few months, and those still hanging on.
