Clean Everything

Today, we’re sharing our first impressions of Dyson’s new stick vacuum. Plus:

A month with PencilVac Fluffycones

For all the convenience they offer, cordless stick vacuums are notoriously imperfect. Maybe yours goes dead after a couple passes, or it takes up too much space in your closet, or pushing it back and forth leaves your wrists sore. Enter: PencilVac Fluffycones (yes, that’s the real name), Dyson’s brand-new $600 vacuum designed to eliminate those annoyances.

Appliance expert Evan Dent spent a month using the skinny, lightweight Dyson to clean his apartment: sucking up dry oatmeal flakes, dog hair, coffee grounds, and more. His verdict? Compared with other Dysons, it’s “markedly more pleasant to use on a daily basis.”

A cordless stick vac can’t ever match the suction and deep-cleaning power of a good upright or canister vacuum. But its compact size and nimble, plug-free design can make the swift cleanup of tiny messes a total breeze. We’ve tested dozens of models to find the best, most convenient machines for a variety of needs — including an option with a self-emptying dock and a budget-friendly pick.

One last thing: Yes, you need to clean your vacuum

Basic maintenance — clearing clogs, cutting tangles, and dealing with dirty filters — can make the difference between a machine that breaks after two years and one that lasts much, much longer. Plus, the entire process takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
