Greetings!Nintendo's "Super Mario" family of games is arguably the most popular video game franchise ever created. With "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," Nintendo, Universal and Illumination are aiming for similar heights on the film side. The only question is whether it will soar higher than its predecessor, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which in 2023 smashed Easter weekend and video game adaptation box office records, eventually raking in $1.36 billion worldwide. The film will almost certainly exceed $1 billion, making "Super Mario" just the third franchise in animation history where its first two installments crossed the $1 billion mark, joining Disney's "Frozen" and "Zootopia." As evidenced by the first film's performance, "Super Mario" benefits from the unique relationships its video games have built over the decades. Thanks to video games spanning from the original "Super Mario Bros." for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 to "Super Mario Galaxy" for the Nintendo Wii or last year's "Super Mario Kart World" for the Nintendo Switch 2, its games appeal to a vast swath of different generations, from Gen X to Gen Alpha. And with gaming, the fanbase can be just as dedicated, if not more so, than with comic book adaptations. So even if the cartoony "Super Mario Galaxy" seemingly appeals to just younger audiences, there will be plenty of older generations packing the theaters for this film. That's a good thing for Universal, Nintendo and Illumination, since the early critical reviews have been poor, with "Super Mario Galaxy" at just 45% on Rotten Tomatoes, and our William Bibbiani calling it "lazy junk." Either way, the film should surpass last April's video game hit, "A Minecraft Movie," which grossed more than $961 million worldwide. And "Super Mario Galaxy" doesn't even have the aid of a chicken jockey meme. Roger Cheng Before we move on, be sure to follow me on my socials linked below for the latest updates. While "Super Mario Galaxy" crossing the $1 billion mark seems like a foregone conclusion, it will take a bit more work to get past the $1.36 billion "Super Mario Bros. Movie" grossed in 2023...
