If so, Daniel Roher might qualify. The filmmaker is about to premiere The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist—that’s “apocalypse” plus “optimist”—a nonfiction film that delves deep into the technology changing all our lives, perhaps for the better. In a freewheeling chat with VF’s John Ross, though, Roher is prone to making statements like this: “This is all smoke and mirrors. The entire economy of AI is being propped up by a Ponzi scheme.” And this, re: Mark Zuckerberg: “Have you seen that guy speak? He’s like a lizard man.” And this, on Sam Altman: “That guy doesn’t know what genuine means.” How’s that for optimism?
