Interview

Woodson Model Congress students were interviewed for WUSA-9

Message from Mr. Greata

Last week marked the conclusion of our annual Model Congress, an incredible, immersive learning opportunity for our students. Participants didn't just study the legislative process; they lived it. From drafting bills to navigating committee markups, floor debates, and final voting, our students gained hands-on experience in how our government functions. We were also fortunate to have ABC News visit our campus last week to film our students in action for a featured story airing in late spring. To cap off the experience, our government students visited Capitol Hill to see the process up close, walking away with a profound understanding of our democracy. A huge thank you to our dedicated Government teachers for their hard work in coordinating this: Lee Hedrick, Kevin Wright, Stephanie Pollack, Toby Hettler, Chuck Russo, and Mike Glander.

In the English department, students recently explored the darker side of politics. To understand what happens when the political process breaks down, students reenacted the Ides of March and the assassination of Julius Caesar. Thank you to Ann Marie Rodgerson for bringing this historical drama to life in such an engaging way for your students!

As we look toward the future, your voice remains a vital part of our success. On Monday, March 9, you should have received the bi-annual FCPS Family Engagement Survey in your inbox. This confidential survey is an essential tool for us to understand how we can better serve your family and foster a trusting, caring culture. It takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. You can learn more via this link, and we ask that you please share your feedback by the end of the day today.

This afternoon, we also took a moment to recognize our many club sponsors and thank them for their incredible hard work. While there are too many names to mention individually in this weekly update, please take a moment to thank a club sponsor if you know one; they volunteer countless hours to ensure that students can pursue their passions and develop lifelong skills. I especially want to thank Margie Shapiro, our club liaison, for her hard work throughout the year to support our sponsors and our clubs.

Our staff and students do so much to support the amazing culture here at Carter G. Woodson High School. We want to send a huge shout-out to our Partnership Class and our Adaptive Curriculum Department. They are instrumental in providing accessible and inclusive extracurricular activities for our students, including organizing the tailgate and supporting FanQuest, hosting parties throughout the year, our Day Prom and so much more. Our school would not be the same without our Partnership class and Adaptive Curriculum team and all their hard work to support inclusion at our school!

Don’t forget Friday, March 27th is a 2 hour early release day and next week is Spring Break! We hope everyone has a chance to get some rest and relaxation prior to the last few months of the school year.

Have a wonderful week!

Volunteers Needed for AP Testing

Woodson High School is in search of parent volunteers and/or recent graduate volunteers for this spring’s AP testing. This is a great opportunity to volunteer during the school day! Training will be provided.

AP exams will take place from May 4th – May 15th. There are two test sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Morning test sessions require proctors to be present from 7:45 a.m.-11:45 a.m. (approximately). Afternoon test sessions require proctors to be present from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. (approximately).

Please contact Elizabeth Walter ehwalter@fcps.edu if you are able to volunteer and help proctor. As always, we greatly appreciate the support. Thank you!
