The Trump administration has announced a plan to transfer significant management of the federal student loan portfolio from the Education Department to the Treasury Department. The move aims to leverage Treasury's financial expertise to better manage the nearly $1.7 trillion in federal student aid and address the high default rate among borrowers. The three-phase transition will begin with Treasury resuming control of defaulted loan collections, expanding to manage non-defaulted loans, and eventually administering the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Education Secretary Linda McMahon says the transition will be seamless for borrowers, though critics argue the administration lacks the authority to carry out such a transfer.
