Destroying Lebanon won’t defeat Hezbollah. “Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah is understandable. After Oct. 7, the country cannot ignore an armed adversary willing to strike its towns. But relying only on brute force and an expanded buffer in Southern Lebanon is at best a short-term answer.”

— Shira Efron, a senior fellow at RAND

Anti-Muslim hate demands repudiation. “Mr. Trump and his Republican Party appear uninterested in protecting the religious rights of Muslims. Instead, they are often hostile to Islam.”

It’s all about Hormuz. “The president should remember that China is watching. If pressure in the oil markets is enough to break America’s resolve and lead Mr. Trump to pull out of the war, Chinese leaders are that much more likely to conclude that our commitments to defend Taiwan are nothing but bluster.”

— Mark Montgomery, a retired U.S. Navy rear admiral

This is what the president is fixated on right now? “For reasons of both ego and ideology, Trump does not believe that he can legitimately lose an election. He is, to his mind, the living embodiment of the nation. If he doesn’t win, then the system must be broken.”

Re: “Let Americans Work 40 Hours a Week

I work for a large retail company and it kills me to see the young people who are offered only part-time hours, which, as the authors stated, can be four hours one week, 25 the next, and can fall anywhere between 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. At one time, we were required to sign a statement swearing to availability all days and all hours. No wonder so many of these young workers live with their parents, have no car nor health insurance and really, no future.— A comment posted by lynkinsun from Massachusetts
