There’s a Rhode Island connection to one of the most affecting films you’ll ever see. All you need is a Netflix subscription, a box of tissues, and an extra 30 minutes in the day to check it out.
“All the Empty Rooms,” which follows Steve Hartman’s journey to the bedrooms of children killed in school shootings across the country, won the Academy Award last night for Best Documentary Short Film.
Jody Snider, a board member at NewportFILM, is a consulting producer on the film. She’s also an executive producer with Smartypants NYC, which produced it. (The talented Joshua Seftel directed.)
Last month, I moderated a discussion about the film at Rough Point in Newport with Mia Tretta, who was wounded in the shooting at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, Calif., and is now a Brown University student who experienced the mass shooting on campus in December. Tretta’s best friend was killed in the California shooting and is featured in “All the Empty Rooms.”
One of the things I appreciated most about the film is that it never tries to turn its tragedy into a lecture. “All the Empty Rooms” follows parents dealing with the most unimaginable loss — kids killed in school shootings — but it doesn’t push a political argument on the audience. Instead, it stays focused on the grief, the silence, and the empty spaces that loss leaves behind. In some ways, that restraint makes the movie hit even harder. It simply shows the human cost and lets you sit with it.
