There’s no greater sigh of relief than after your hotel room door closes behind you for the first time. You’ve finally made it to your destination, you turn around and – hold up, is this a king bed or two twin beds pushed together?
I imagine myself an easygoing traveler who can rest her head on any pillow, but lately I’ve found myself more persnickety about accommodation (you’ll know if you read our Substack post about our 6 favorite hotels of 2025). I don’t necessarily need a 5-star property in Paris with Eiffel Tower views (I don’t not need it either); at a minimum, I want a unique hotel with close attention to detail.
Take Cameron House in Scotland: a mix of posh rooms with traditional Scottish decor and others with a more artful, modern twist, overlooking Loch Lomond, Scotland's largest lake. I stayed here in 2024 and nominated it for our list of memorable hotels in Europe.
