Dear Travel Fan,

When the war with Iran started, Dr. Jay Miller was on a flight from Doha, Qatar, to Dallas after a family trip to India. His plane turned around and Dr. Miller became one of thousands of travelers stranded in the Middle East. For days he tried to get help, including from the U.S. State Department. But in the end, he took matters into his own hands and booked a long, circuitous and expensive journey home to New Orleans. He told his story to our airlines reporter, Christine Chung.

The war is affecting many aspects of travel, including, potentially, what it will cost to fly. We’d like to hear what you’re thinking about travel right now, given the conflict and other factors. Tell us if you’re changing your destination, canceling altogether or sticking to your plans.

The current partial government shutdown means T.S.A. agents are about to miss their first full paycheck. What will that mean for getting through security? We took a look (and we’ll be monitoring things this weekend).

We look at vacationing from different ends of the price spectrum this week. One of our writers stayed at the lush, all-inclusive Pine Cay resort in Turks and Caicos. The other put together a list of wellness experiences you can have on a budget. You can choose your price point, or enjoy both.

River cruising has become increasingly popular, and if you’re interested, we’ve put together this guide to how to book your first trip. Our 36 Hours column visits the stunning red rock landscape of Grand Junction, Colo.

And, finally, St. Patrick’s Day is on Tuesday. Our colleagues on the International desk did a pub crawl in Dublin in advance of the day. But there was one big difference: Many of the drinks being served were alcohol free. Sláinte!

Wishing you safe and happy travels,
Amy Virshup
