Recent polling underscores a challenge that feels both urgent and deeply personal. The 2026 Edelman Trust Barometer reports that “Seven in 10 respondents report unwillingness or hesitance to trust someone with different values, approaches to social issues, backgrounds, or information sources.”
When trust erodes, so too does confidence in the future. Faith in leadership and institutions declines. Governance becomes more fragile. The consequences reach beyond politics and into the fabric of daily life.
Rebuilding trust begins with relationships. It grows when citizens, neighbors, colleagues, friends, and family members choose to engage across differences.
At the Aspen Institute, one way we work to cultivate trust is through connection. This happens in fellowships that foster enduring bonds, in
seminars that make space for rigorous and respectful dialogue, in programs like
Weave: The Social Fabric Project that strengthen neighborhood ties, at
Airplane Mode gatherings that bring rising leaders together in creative moments, and in special initiatives such as the Trust in Practice Awards from the
Alliance for Social Trust.
Across these efforts, the work is consistent: creating spaces where people can listen, learn, lead, and be together, because we know trust is not assumed, it's practiced.
