Yesterday I talked about that feeling of learning English for a long time but still not feeling like you're getting anywhere. |
Here's why I think that's happening. |
Think about how you've learnt English so far. Probably a bit like this:
- some grammar from school
- a few new words from an app
- a couple of phrases from a TV show
Maybe a course that taught you the basics but didn't really go much further. |
Every one of those things taught you something. They weren't a waste of time.
But here's the problem. None of them gave you the full picture. They each gave you a small piece, but nobody showed you how all the pieces fit together.
So you end up with this strange feeling. You've studied a lot. You know many pieces of English but they don’t connect. The times that you actually want to use your English (in a conversation, at work, on holiday) it doesn't come out the way you want it to. The words are in your head somewhere, but you can’t find them fast enough.

One of my students said something that really stayed with me. She said her English felt "chaotic and disordered" – like a messy room where you know your things are somewhere, but you can never find what you need when you need it. |
And that's not her fault and it’s not your fault either! That's what happens when you learn in small pieces from lots of different places. A bit here, a bit there, hoping it all comes together one day. |
But it doesn't come together on its own. You need a clear path. Something that takes grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, listening and reading and connects them all, step by step. Where every lesson builds on the one before it. |
That's what actually works. Not more apps, random word lists and videos here and there (well, maybe a few of my videos!). A clear path from where you are now to where you want to be. |
I've seen it work for so many students. People who felt exactly the way you might be feeling right now – stuck, frustrated, not sure what to try next – and then everything changed. |
Tomorrow, I want to tell you about some of them. |
