Roadrunner Rundown
March 2, 2026
Principal's Message
Dear Marshall Road Families,
So many of the good things that happen at and around MRES are due to caring and involved parents and community members. Below are a few examples from last week.
STEAM Night was a wonderful event enjoyed by students, parents and staff - thanks to the PTA and parent volunteers who gave of their time. We enjoyed seeing so many of our families enjoy this fun and learning event.
Michele Sullivan who lives near our school, is a former MRES parent and a current FCPS employee. She was kind enough to contact us last week to let us know when a power line went down that could have impacted our Kiss & Ride and walkers. She even followed up when the issue was resolved. Thanks, Michelle, for being such a great community and FCPS member!
We need your help in ensuring the safety of all at arrival and dismissal. Please read and follow the guidelines.
- Do not drop off or pick up students in Rachel Court.
- Do not cross Marshall Road at the top of the hill. You may cross at the crosswalk by door 2.
- No U-turns are allowed on Marshall Road
Have a great week.
Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

Social and Emotional Learning Screening
FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring. The Spring SEL Screener will be administered next week, March 9-13th. Opt-outs forms are available at The Parent Digital Consent System. Questions? Please reach out to Meg Gillespie, mmgillespie@fcps.edu or(703) 937-1558

Rising Kindergarten 2026-2027
If you have a preschool-age child who is eligible for kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year, please complete the Survey of Preschool Children form and email it to mmarcumkoshu@fcps.edu (Shelly Koshuta, school registrar). A paper copy will be sent home in the Tuesday Folders. This survey is due by March 31. If you know of any children in your neighborhood who this may apply to, please share this information, and ask them to contact the school office at 703-937-1500. If you have already contacted the registrar about enrolling your rising kindergarten student, you do not need to complete this form.
The rising kindergarten orientation will be held for parents and student(s) on April 22 at 2:00 pm.
Virginia law, Section 22.1-254 requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2021, must be enrolled in kindergarten for the 2026-2027 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.
Thank you for your assistance in helping us identify school-age children.
Mark your calendar: Kindergarten Orientation, April 22, 2:00 pm.

MRES Read-A-Thon Starts THIS WEEK (March 2–13)
Our first MRES Read-A-Thon runs for two weeks, and we have some amazing incentives lined up for the kids and for TEACHERS!
-
How it Works: Students choose the material they want to read or have read to them and track their minutes through 99Pledges.com. For every 60 minutes (PreK-1st) or 120 minutes (2nd-6th), a student gets entered one time in a raffle to choose from fun prizes! All parents will get an invitation email to set up their students page by the end of February.
-
Student Raffle Prizes: The lucky winner gets to choose from awesome experiences, including having lunch with 3 friends and a specialist, helping Mrs. Hoffman pick a new book for the library that will have their name in the dedication, and pulling the fire alarm at an upcoming fire drill!
-
Class Prize (Top Fundraisers): The class that raises the most money gets to choose their ultimate reward: (1) Writing a message on the school marquee, (2) Up to 1-hour class photo booth, OR (3) An ice cream party!
-
Teacher Prize (Top Participation): The teacher with the highest student participation will win a stack of new books for their classroom library!

Mark your Calendar - PTA meeting on Thursday, March 26th at 6:00 pm!
We’ll hear from Alan Chen of the Town of Vienna about the Nutley Culvert Project—an 11-month project expected to significantly impact MRES families, especially during arrival and dismissal, with changes to traffic patterns and sidewalks. This will directly affect our daily routines, so we encourage all families to attend to learn what to expect, key timelines, and how we can best prepare and support our students. We hope you can join us!
Staff Spotlight
Hooray for Ms. Vernon, one of our fantastic Kindergarten teachers, who snagged the PTA Priority Parking Spot this week! This is Ms. Vernon’s 5th year at MRES. She loves “the inclusive environment and working with so many talented people.” When Ms. Vernon isn’t making Kindergarten magic, she loves running and spending time with friends and family. Fun fact: Ms. Vernon is related to a Grammy award winning musician!
