John Robert "Jack" Peters
July 20, 1951-February 25, 2026
John Robert "Jack" Peters, 74, most recently of Anna, TX, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2026. Jack was born in Chicago, Illinois and was raised by his parents John H, Jr and Genrose (Kelly) Peters in East Dundee, IL with his five siblings: Michael, Diane Atkins, Deborah (Thomas) McGuire, Timothy (Karen), and Brian.
Jack graduated from Dundee High School in 1969. In his 20s, after some time working for Ma Bell, he started a long career in public service. His first fire service job was at Elgin State Hospital, later joined the East Dundee and Countryside Fire Department. Jack was a proud member of the first graduating class of Paramedics for East Dundee through Sherman Hospital. After serving as a fireman and paramedic, Jack went on to join the East Dundee Police Department. Serving his community, and making lasting friendships along the way, Jack moved up the ranks to Sergeant before retiring in 2009.
Jack has two sons with his first wife Pamela Meaker, Adam (Kerri) Peters and Shawn (Collette) Peters, who each have three children of their own. Jack, as a young patrolman in East Dundee, and his fellow officers all traded labor working on each other's houses for their new families. Adam and Shawn both fondly remember unofficial rides to school in "the squad" and the Chief may or may not have had to free a wrongfully detained preschooler from handcuffs Adam pinched from Dad's work belt. The boys and Dad also took a very memorable fishing trip to Canada where it was unseasonably warm and the fishing was slow. Jack was not at all frustrated when thinking about how much the nine fish cost per pound.
Jack has stepchildren with his second wife Paula. Stacee, Eric, and Kelsee had the pleasure of living with a police sergeant's expectations of chores and attitude through their teen years. Stacee remembers how Jack would take his vacation every year to tackle home improvement projects, like building a pool and deck for all the kids to enjoy all summer in Kingston.
In the last several years, Jack and his wife Haley built their dream house in Anna, TX. Jack happily bragged about the warmer weather and enjoyed having a big enough yard to need a riding lawn mower. Jack was a survivor and very much earned his quiet coffee on the porch in Texas. He slowed down more recently, but Haley shared that it didn't stop him from racing the motorized carts at the store. Jack was surrounded by his extended family in Texas, including Haley's parents and children.
Jack was a memorable figure in the community; often creating a safe space in a moment of others' tragedies. Being an officer seemed to be a 24/7 job in a small community, including countless words of wisdom from his seat at the counter, his unofficial office up on the hill. He served his community with dignity and humor and is remembered by many.
Jack is survived by his children, grandchildren (who were spoiled with countless gifts), his siblings, nieces, and nephews
