For the first time in school history, both our girls and boys programs captured Region Championships in the same season. Two teams. Two trophies. One Stallion Nation.
Wednesday night set the tone in front of a packed home crowd. The girls opened the evening with a dominant 72-17 win over Lake Braddock. From the opening tip, it was all Stallions. Defensive pressure, pace, and unselfish offense overwhelmed the Bruins. Laila Tull led the charge with 20 points and 6 steals. while Natalya Wooten added 16 points and 5 rebounds.
The boys followed with a commanding 57-33 victory over Robinson. It was a complete performance on both ends of the floor and sent our fans home energized and ready for more.
Friday night, the girls traveled to Hayfield to face Robinson and wasted no time asserting themselves. South County scored early and often, controlling the tempo throughout the night. Maia Melendez poured in 16 points, Adrianna Ortiz-Mayorga added 15, Tull controlled the glass with 9 rebounds. and Wooten continued to be dominant on the back end with 8 rebounds and 8 steals.
The boys semifinal was the definition of playoff basketball. Facing Lake Braddock for the fourth time this season, the matchup lived up to the rivalry. Back and forth all night. Every possession mattered. There were a mere 9 seconds left on the clock when the Bruins hit two free throws to take a one point lead. With the season on the line, Senior Johnny Anderson took the inbound, went coast to coast, spun under the basket, and finished a left handed layup to steal the victory and send the Stallions to the finals.
A senior moment that will live in South County history.
Saturday night at Robinson, both teams finished the job.
The girls took on a gritty West Potomac squad in a rematch of the district finals. The Wolverines jumped out early, but the Stallions stayed composed, reclaimed the lead late in the first quarter, and never gave it back. South County secured the crown with a 64-54 win behind 18 point performances by Tull and Ortiz-Mayorga.
The boys capped the night against Edison in another classic.
Edison came out hot and led 14-9 after one quarter. The Stallions responded, grinding their way to a 22-21 halftime lead. The Eagles battled all night, but South County’s depth and stamina took control in the fourth quarter.
Final score: 51-40.
Two championships in one night and moment our community will not forget.
Beyond the wins, both programs showed great composure, resilience, leadership, and belief. Our student-athletes competed with heart, represented South County with class, and made history together.
And we are not done.
