Years ago, we moved from bustling Tenerife to peaceful El Hierro in the Canary Islands. Our belongings would be moved by truck and ship, but we were flying between the islands, along with an aloof ten-year-old cat, who had been given up by his previous owner, and our pet canary.

Unfortunately, the chap at the Binter check-in counter was adamant that we could only take one pet into the cabin with us. I asked if our cat could go in the cargo area and the answer was yes, except that you needed a hard-sided transportation box, whereas ours was a soft one, as per cabin regulations. (Keep reading)
