Pakistan's defence minister has declared "open war" on the Afghan government after the Taliban announced a major offensive against Pakistani military posts near the border on Thursday night. Pakistan confirmed strikes on the capital Kabul and border provinces of Kandahar and Paktika in what they said was retaliation for the earlier attacks on Pakistani troops. Each side has accused the other of attacking first and both claim to have inflicted heavy losses on the other side.
