In case you're not doing anything between 4-5 a.m. on Tuesday, Colorado will be positioned for a total lunar eclipse visible over the western horizon. I'm sure most of you would rather slumber through it, but I find the moon deeply fascinating. Maybe that's because my family was among the 1 million people who watched the Apollo 11 moon launch from a vantage point near the Kennedy Space Center. You can call me a lunatic if you like.

Heads up

Look for sunny skies Friday and Saturday in the metro area with high temperatures near 70. Sunday will bring a chance of rain with high temperatures near 60. Highs at Summit County resorts, Loveland, Winter Park and Vail will be in the low to mid 30s with 1-2 inches of snow forecast for Sunday.

Worth Your Time

Over the past two winters, crews have removed thousands of dead cottonwood trees killed by high water levels in Chatfield Reservoir that were allowed for additional water storage. Some stumps remain, as this photo taken last month shows. “It’s unfortunate that they’re still there,” said park manager Kris Wahlers, “but because of the sustained higher water levels, crews haven’t been able to get low enough to cut them out.” Eventually, he said, they will be removed. Get Yourself Outdoors

Iconic Highland Bowl at Aspen Highlands offers some of the most challenging in-bounds skiing and riding in Colorado. It requires a hike of 45 minutes or more from the top of the Loge lift (visible lower right) on a ridge that climbs more than 700 feet to the bowl’s summit. The bowl’s ski terrain (shown upper left) offers more than 2,000 vertical feet of skiing on slopes reaching nearly 50 degrees. (Daniel Bayer/Aspen Snowmass)
