I was lost, late and exhausted. I worked part-time for the local paper, and the bulk of the work I did for them was covering meetings for school boards and towns. Occasionally, my editor would assign me a human-interest story, and this was one of them. A local resident was celebrating her 105th birthday, and I was tasked with writing an article about her.
I had already taken pictures at her birthday party, but her family and I had decided that we would schedule a separate day to do the interview so she could just enjoy her party and visit with everyone. After all, how many times do you turn 105? We set up a time to meet the following weekend. Then, the centenarian got the sniffles, so we pushed back the appointment a week. Then, my youngest son got the flu, so we pushed it back another week. Suddenly, it was a month after the birthday party, and my editor was less than thrilled that I had yet to produce a story.
