Flatiron Snags Adult Debut by YA Author Dhonielle Clayton
Caroline Bleeke and Maxine Charles at Flatiron bought, at auction, in a two-book deal, world English rights to Conjure the Bones by Dhonielle Clayton from Suzie Townsend at New Leaf Literary & Media. Clayton’s adult debut, per the publisher, is a “romantic contemporary fantasy novel set within the decadent magical wards of New Orleans, about a woman whose otherworldly inheritance is threatened when she is pulled back toward the forbidden love who got away.” Release is set for winter 2027, with an as-yet-untitled sequel to follow.
HarperVia Lands Sakamoto Memoir
HarperVia editor Alexa Frank and Jud Laghi at the Jud Laghi Agency have acquired world English and audio rights to Ryuichi Sakamoto’s memoir Music Sets You Free, translated by Sam Bett, from Ken Mori at Tuttle-Mori Agency. Publication is slated for September 22.
Barbara Kingsolver Returns to Harper With New Novel
Jonathan Burnham, president and publisher of Harper, acquired USCOM rights to Barbara Kingsolver’s Partita, a “deeply moving novel about life and art,” from Sam Stoloff of the Frances Goldin Literary Agency. Release is set for October 6.

New projects this week include Cold Blood by Aashna Avachat, a YA mystery in which an aspiring journalist is recruited to solve the murder of a wealthy patriarch of a reclusive family—before it happens; journalist Amir Ahmadi Arian’s YA debut, The Season of Wild Poppies, about 15-year-old Yashar, who makes that shocking discovery as Iraqi forces infiltrate his hometown of Ahvaz that his parents had a child before him who has never been discussed; and Paper Ghosts by Samantha Chong, a Malaysian YA fantasy about a paper effigy maker who buries herself in her work as a soul guide to cope with the aftermath of the spirit realm terrorizing her, only to be yanked out of her comfort zone when she is attacked by a vengeful ghost.
