Louder: Billy Idol had it all, and then he “lit it with butane”
Plus: Billy Preston, 9 songs we’re talking about, Peaches and more

It was a tale of three Billys this week: Melena Ryzik profiled Billy Idol, who told a story about the “soft-porn guy” who used to live in his house in the first three minutes of their meeting. (He certainly has stories.) As he prepares for the release of a new documentary about his life, he chronicled the wild years that nearly took him out and how he came up with his biggest hits. (All with a sneer, I have to presume.)

Billy Preston, the beloved Beatles collaborator and artist in his own right, is also the subject of a new doc, albeit one that was extremely challenging to make: Preston, who died in 2006 at age 59, kept crucial parts of his identity hidden (that he was gay, and experienced abuse as a child). Jim Farber tells his story, now that a fuller picture of this brilliant musician and his tragic end are coming to light.

And we lost Billy Steinberg, a songwriter whose hundreds of contributions to the pop canon include collaborations on five incredible No. 1s: Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” Heart’s “Alone,” Whitney Houston’s “So Emotional,” Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” and the Bangles’ “Eternal Flame.”
