Dear Travel Fan, Savannah, Ga., with its layered history, excellent restaurants and walkable downtown, is a favorite with many travelers. Our 36 Hours column visits the city this week, with updates on its vibrant arts scene and some debunking of its many myths. Las Vegas is also a perennial favorite, but while many visitors know about residencies by big-name artists, there’s also a lesser-known lounge scene that spotlights local singers in intimate, theatrical settings. Our guide helps you find the best spots. If you’re looking to escape winter, even if it’s just for a few days (what’s now called a microvacation), you could do far worse than exploring the many stunning beaches of the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. And though it may not feel like it now, winter is starting to wind down. One sign: the start of maple sugaring season. We’ve got a roundup of the best places to see syrup being produced (and they’re not just in Vermont). Many people have been predicting a big year for travel to the United States, with the World Cup, America’s 250th anniversary and 100 years of Route 66 all drawing visitors. But early numbers are showing that the slump in travel to the U.S. that started last year is continuing, as Trump administration policies discourage some people from coming. Even Disney is warning of “headwinds” at its American theme parks. These days, many people looking to learn a second language rely on apps. But one writer who wanted to learn German turned to a series of 1970s books written by a motorcyle-riding free spirit named Adrienne. Finally, I fell in love with the novelist Deepa Anappara’s writing when I read her 2020 novel, “Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line.” Her new book, “The Last of Earth,” is set in Tibet, and, after upheavals in her own life, Ms. Anappara went on a trek in the Himalayas that she chronicles for us this week. It deals with loss, grief, pain and peace. Wishing you safe and meaningful travels,
